ظللتُ أسأل نفسي كيف تعشقها

بقية من بقايا العمر تحترق

بقية من بقايا العمر تحترق

I kept asking myself: how could she be loved

I wondered how she could love me,

By a burning remnant of life's remains?

A remnant of my life burning away.

وافيتها وفلول النور دامية

وافيتها وفلول النور دامية

تطفو وترسب أو تعلو فتعتلقُ

تطفو وترسب أو تعلو فتعتلقُ

I came to her while the remnants of light were bleeding,

I met her while sparks of light bled,

Floating and sinking, or rising, then hanging suspended.

لم أدر حين تبدت لي إذا شفقي

أبصرته أو على المنصورة الشفق

أبصرته أو على المنصورة الشفق

I did not know, when she appeared to me, whether it was my twilight

I did not know when dawn appeared to me,

I saw, or the twilight over Mansoura.

If I saw it or the glowing sunset.

يا من منحت الأماني البيض معذرة

يا من منحت الأماني البيض معذرة

إني بهذي الأماني البيض أختنقُ

إني بهذي الأماني البيض أختنقُ

O you who bestowed white hopes, forgive me:

O you who gave white wishes an excuse,

I am choking on these white hopes.

With these white wishes I suffocate.

أين الهدوء المرجى في جوانبها

أين الهدوء المرجى في جوانبها

إني رجعت وليلي كله أرق

إني رجعت وليلي كله أرق

Where is the hoped-for calm within its bounds?

Where is the hoped calm around her?

I returned, and my whole night is sleeplessness.

والموج مجتمع فيه ومفترق

Did the Nile hear, as we walked beside it,

Can the Nile hear us passing by,

With waves gathering and parting within it,

Its waves gathered and scattered?

صوتاً تماوج في روحي فجاوبه

صوتاً تماوج في روحي فجاوبه

من جانب القلب موج راح يصطفق

من جانب القلب موج راح يصطفق

A voice that rippled through my soul, and was answered

A voice surging in my soul answered,

From the heart's side by waves that began to crash?

From the heart's side a wave clashed.

تظل تنهب أذني من أطايبه

كأنها من خفايا الغيب تسترق

كأنها من خفايا الغيب تسترق

My ear keeps plundering some of its choicest delights,

She continues to steal from my ear,

As though it were stealing from the hidden mysteries of the unseen.

As if from the unseen's secrets she steals.

يا جنة من جنان الله أعبدها

يا جنة من جنان الله أعبدها

لن تبعدي ولدي السحر والعبق

لن تبعدي ولدي السحر والعبق

O garden among God's gardens, which I worship,

O paradise of God's gardens I worship,

You will not be far away while enchantment and fragrance are with me.

You will not distance me, my charm and fragrance.
