    Ah, In‘am, your charms are many!

    Whoever fails to describe you has no excuse.

    God created that beauty, but

    The Creator of charms has a secret:

    It pleased Him that every beauty should have poetry

    As its attendant; for glory is beauty and verse.

    And I am the poet who has been beguiled

    By a peerless, radiant delight.

    Wherever the beholder turns his eyes,

    There is enchantment, followed by enchantment, then enchantment.

    So from cheek to brow to eyes,

    To lips—a volume of your meanings.

    إِن تولَّى سطر تتابَعَ سطرُ

    The onlookers read wonders within it;

    If one line passes, another follows.

    Beauty is not to blame if a life passes

    In its revelation, or a lifetime is lost.

    Many a beauty seems, in its gentleness,

    To hold tenderness within, and kindness in its folds.

    You may indeed mistake gentleness for weakness,

    Yet it reigns, with power to forbid and command.

    نحن أسراكِ ما بأسراكِ حرُّ

    So command us, In‘am, without a command;

    We are your captives; none of your captives is free.

    واضحكي في فم المنى يفتَرُ

    And command Time: Time becomes a slave;

    And laugh into the mouth of hope; it will smile.

    And command the garden: the garden becomes

    Luxuriant; roses grow, and blossoms put forth leaves.

    ويشدُو غصنٌ ويطربُ وَكرُ

    And command the birds: the birds warble joyfully;

    And a branch sings, and a nest rejoices.

    وتحنو روحٌ ويطربُ صدرُ

    And command the heart: the heart beats joyfully;

    And a soul grows tender, and a breast rejoices.

    وتعنو نارٌ ويخضعُ جمرُ

    And command the embers: the embers become like water;

    And fire bows, and embers submit.

    ويعنو موجٌ ويهجعُ بحرُ

    And command the sea: the sea's waves grow calm;

    And waves bow, and the sea falls asleep.

    Ah, In‘am, this is beauty's onslaught,

    Which shatters the strong and scatters them.
