الحزنُsorrow قوتيmy sustenance والشّقاءُand misery ردائيmy cloak
ياO منyou who تَجرّعَdrank down حسرةَanguish الآباءِthe fathers
Sorrow is my sustenance, and misery my cloak.
Sorrow is my sustenance, and misfortune my garment,
O you who have swallowed the anguish of fathers,
O you who has tasted the regret of forefathers.

I bade my heart farewell the day I bade farewell, in
I bid farewell to my heart the day I bid farewell,
al-Sharifa’s embrace, to a piece of my own flesh.
In the embrace of the noble one, the apple of my eye.
حيٌّliving منamong الأمواتِthe dead أُحسَبُI am counted بعدهُafter him
أمor أننيthat I am ميتٌdead منamong الأحياءِthe living
Am I counted, after him, as living among the dead,
Am I alive among the dead after him?
or am I dead among the living?
Or am I dead among the living?
ليلُthe night العِبادِhumankind يَزورُنيvisits me مُتربّصاًlying in wait
وكأنّهُand as though it يسعىseeks الىto إيذائيharming me
The night of humankind visits me, lying in wait,
The night of worshipers visits me lying in ambush,
as though it seeks to do me harm.
As if it is trying to harm me.
واليلُand the night يحملُنيcarries me علىupon أكتافِهِits shoulders
فاذاthen suddenly بِلَيلِthere is the night of البائسينَthe wretched إزائيbefore me
And the night carries me upon its shoulders,
And the night carries me on its shoulders,
then suddenly, the night of the wretched is before me.
So there I am, with the night of the miserable.
ليسis not التّغرّبُexile أنto تفارقَyou part from موطناًa homeland
إنindeed الغريبَthe exile مُفارقُone parted from الأبناءِthe children
Exile is not to part from a homeland;
Expatriation is not to leave a homeland,
indeed, an exile is one parted from his children.
But an expatriate is one who parts from his children.
