When you set a snare, O gazelle of the valley,
When you set up a partner, O healer of the valley
in that gathering-place,
In that club

هدت فؤاداً قيدته نغمة الشادي
فهلso is there لهfor it فادa ransomer
فهل له فاد
a heart was shattered, bound by the singer's melody—
You captivated a heart, binding it with the melody of happiness
is there anyone, then, to ransom it?
So does it have redemption

للَه روض قطفت من جنتي عاد

عاد بن شداد
By God, what a garden I plucked from ‘Ad's two gardens—
For God a garden from which I picked for Ad
‘Ad, son of Shaddad!
Ad bin Shaddad

حبالة الشادي
I have room; I ask that my arms be encircled
With me there is room to ask that you bring together my limbs
by the singer's snare.
Roped by happiness

My visitors have not seen me, despite my body's wasting;
He did not see me in my thin body habits
who will bring me a visitor?
Who will bring me back?

And wherever love for you had imposed my sleeplessness,
And wherever your love was, the obligation of my happiness followed
I grew accustomed to my sleeplessness.
I befriended my happiness

I say to the caravan, which the camel-driver has urged onward—
I say to the slanderer when the sharp-tongued accused
the driver who urges the driver on:
The sharp tongue with the sharp tongue

So none stays, O camel-driver, and none guides
So there is no resident, O sharp-tongued, and no guide
by the guiding moon.
With the guiding moon

From a mind that followed your usual footsteps
with the running gazelle-fawn.

Love has worn out a frail body atop camel saddle-frames,
The passion exhausted a frail body above tied hands
a captive in fetters.
Captive of ties

With your sweet, sweetening saliva, the thirsty are quenched,
Your sweet local brilliance is quenched by the echo
and so is my thirsty heart.
And my echoing heart

Visit me, if only as a phantom vision that brings me joy.
Visit me even the ghost of a fantasy in which is my happiness
Far beyond reach is my happiness!
Alas, my happiness

I last saw her among the riding camels; the camel-driver drove her onward.
My pact with her between saddlebags was led by the sharp-tongued
May the camel-driver never prosper!
The sharp-tongued does not succeed

I witnessed love's covenant, and I was called to witness
I witnessed the covenant of passion so my witness was
before my birth.
