My head has turned gray, but the head of greed has not.

The one who craves this world is surely weary.

Why do I find that whenever I seek a rank

and attain it, my eyes aspire to higher ranks?

With the learning I have acquired, I ought

not to enter into anything that diminishes me.

If time spoke truthfully to me through what it reveals,

my grief over this world and my toil would not be so great.

I strive and exhaust myself for what I cannot attain,

while death wears away my limbs and sinews.

By God, how many houses have you passed

that once overflowed with pleasures and merriment?

The surging tides of death swept through their rooms,

and afterward they became places of woe and strife.

So rein yourself in; no palm blossoms are gathered with your reins.

By your eyes, provision does not come simply through seeking.

A servant may receive provision without tiring his mounts,

while one who has spared no effort in seeking may be denied it.

Yet I find one thing among people:

provision and gifts are bound together by a cause.

And there is a condition with no clear sign of wealth:

provision is a most troubling matter for people of learning.

You of keen understanding, how many fools have you seen

beside whom a learned person is barer of provision than one beset by mange?
