I see the free man as a slave to one whose hand’s bounty

Has bought him with what vexed him—the utmost praise.

Yet owning a free man is a nobler means

To glory than wealth kept safe or a slave.

And though ownership of a free man is sold only for a favor,

When that favor is met with gratitude, glory accompanies it.
