Was it the dove among Ibn Haddaj's palms
The dove in the palm trees of Ibn Haddaj
That stirred the longing of a captive, troubled heart,
Fluttered, with a lovesick heart full of passion
أَمor المُخَبِّرُthe bearer of news أَنَّthat الغَيثَthe rain قَدalready وَضَعَتgave birth

Or the messenger saying that the rain had been brought forth
Or did the messenger report that the rain has deposited
By its ten-month-pregnant cloud-camels, full-term, not prematurely?
Its tithe in full, without stint?

Their sweeping fringes cut through al-Farsh, from Malal
Its clouds ripped through the cushions out of boredom
To al-A'arif, over rugged ground and hollows,
To the dwellings, in grief and pining
حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّas though وَجوهَthe faces of الأَرضِthe earth مُلبَسَةٌclothed

Until the faces of the earth seemed clothed
Until it seemed the face of the earth was clad
In fine fabrics woven from striped-cloth and brocade warps.
In brocade of jet black and gold embroidery

فَعِشتُso I lived مِنfrom قَلبِa heart ماضٍresolute غيرnot منعاجِturning aside
The boy was stirred to longing, and so stirred me;
The child stirred to longing and stirred me
So I lived, sustained by a resolute heart that would not turn aside.
So I lived with a heart no longer barred

And Ibn al-Zabannaj is among what can stir me,
And Ibn Zabbanj of what may stir me
In the manner of one lamenting, sobbing in the night.
With a lovely night visitor, chatting
أَمّاas for السَريُّal-Sari فَإِنّيso indeed I سَوفَshall أَمدَحُهُpraise him
ماnot المادِحُthe praiser الذاكِرُwho remembers الإِحسانَkindness كالهاجيlike the reviler
As for al-Sari, I shall praise him;
As for the secret, I will praise him
The praiser who remembers kindness is not like the reviler.
For the praiser recalling kindness is never dull
ذاكَthat one الَّذيwho هُوَhe بَعدَafter اللَهِGod أَنقَذَنيrescued me

He is the one who, after God, rescued me;
He who after God saved me
So I will not forget him for rescuing me and bringing me out.
I'll not forget his saving and releasing me

A lion at Hajr: whenever an alarm rouses him,
A lion with a stone, when passion seizes him
He rushes to meet it, bridling and saddling.
Passion seizes him with muzzles and saddlebags

Accompanying pilgrims of Umrah and Hajj.
That accompanies Umar and Hajjaj

He bestowed his favor out of benevolence and kindness
He gave graciousness in kindness and gentleness
On one ever knocking at the gate of sovereignty, ever entering.
To the doors of the rulers' court

How many favors of yours have already been bestowed among the people,
How many hands have gone before you
On a man of wealth or on one in need.
With a wealthy man or with one in need
