Turn aside, you two, to the dwelling-site of Layla, Umm Mahmud,
so that we may question it, this side of Abbud,
عَنabout أُمِّmother of مَحمودMahmud إِذsince شَطَّgrew distant المَزارُthe place of visitation بِهاwith her
عَن أُمِّ مَحمود إِذ شَطَّ المَزارُ بِها
لَعَلَّperhaps ذَلِكَthat يَشفيwill heal داءَthe sickness of مَعمودِone stricken with love
لَعَلَّ ذَلِكَ يَشفي داءَ مَعمودِ
about Umm Mahmud, since her abode has grown distant;
perhaps that will heal a love-stricken man's sickness.

Then they both turned aside after a noonday rest, when
the sun of day stood still and the shade took refuge by the trunk,

for a while; yet the ruins of a dwelling returned no
answer, deserted as they were, to a heartbroken, dying man.

That is the noble man without whose outpouring
of kindness we would have died, O ally of glory and generosity.

You are a son of the Batha's broad expanse; your roots are in
the Batha of Mecca, not the summits of craggy hills.

Yours of old are its watering service and its council;
a father among you secured them for his offspring.

But for hope in you, no young she-camels would have borne us
through the depths of a wilderness, a waste devoid of waymarks.

from the direction of your land, amid dark clouds piled in layers.
