I had forsaken my recent folly, and was sobered by
a crop of gray hair scattered at both temples,

until I met al-Saʿdi’s daughter on the day of Safa;
and full-figured, supple-necked women do heighten my youthful passion.

Then she stopped me, revealing a place made lovely
by her presence, and told the hunters of youth, “Hunt!”

Indeed, the fair women—there is always one beauty
among them, for love of whom longing visits me anew.
