إذا ما الفكرُ وَلّدَ حُسنَ لفظ

وأدّاه الضَّميرُ إلى العيان

When thought begets beauty of expression,

When thought brings forth beautiful expression,

And the inward mind brings it into view,

And the inner mind conveys it into view,

ووشّاه فَنَمنَمَه مُسَدٍ

ووشّاه فَنَمنَمَه مُسَدٍ

فصيحٌ في المقال بلا لسان

فصيحٌ في المقال بلا لسان

And a weaver adorns it, then patterns it—

And a weaver embroiders it, then adorns it with fine designs,

Eloquent in discourse, though tongueless—

Eloquent in speech, though without a tongue,

رأيتَ حُلى البيان مُنَشَّراتٍ

رأيتَ حُلى البيان مُنَشَّراتٍ

تَجَلّى بينها صُوَرُ المَعاني

تَجَلّى بينها صُوَرُ المَعاني

You behold the ornaments of eloquence spread out,

You see the ornaments of eloquence spread out;

Among them the forms of meanings shine forth.
