So, because of the ill I have suffered, I have come

to call you Abu al-Kalb (Father of the Dog), not Abu al-Asad (Father of the Lion).

If my livelihood rests with you, then cast it

into the eyes of a serpent lying in wait.

Had I been free, as you claimed—and you had

worn me down with delays—I would not have returned.

Yet I returned, then returned again; so if

I return to anything like it, then do it again.

The harm of what you did freed me from

bondage—oh, how cool it feels upon my liver!

So I became a slave to the evil in you; never

before me had evil been done so kindly to anyone.
