ياO صاحِبَيَّmy two friends تَأَمَّلاconsider, you two عذرىmy excuse
غلبhas been overcome العَزاءُsolace وَخانَنيand betrayed me صَبريmy patience
O my two friends, consider my excuse.
O my friends, consider my excuse
Solace has been overcome, and my patience has betrayed me,
Consolation has failed me and my patience has betrayed me
منbecause of حُبّlove for جارِيَةa maiden كَلِفتُI became infatuated بِهاwith her
كَالبَدرِlike the full moon بَلnay أَبهىlovelier منthan البَدرِthe full moon
Because of love for a maiden with whom I am infatuated,
For the love of a charming neighbor I have been burdened
Like the full moon—nay, lovelier than the full moon.
Like the full moon, nay more beautiful than the full moon
أَغرَيتُمانيyou two have inflamed my desire لائمَينwhile reproaching me بهاfor her
وَأَبيتماand you two refused أَنto تَقبَلاyou two accept عُذريmy excuse
You two, reproaching me, have inflamed my love for her,
You two blamed me for her
And you two have refused to accept my excuse.
And refused to accept my excuse
وَأَرَدتُمانيand you two wanted me أَنto أُطيعكماI obey you both
إِنّيindeed I إِذاًthen لَمُمَلَّكٌsurely made master of أَمريmy affairs
And you two wanted me to obey you both—
And wanted me to obey you
Then I would indeed be made master of my own affairs!
Then I would not be in control of my own affair
