أَباO father of جَعفَرJaʿfar هَلّاwhy not اِصطَنَعتَyou cultivated مَوَدّتيmy friendship
أَبا جَعفَر هَلّا اِصطَنَعتَ مَوَدّتي
وَكُنتَand you would be مُصيباearning فيَّin my case أَجراًa reward وَمَصنَعاand a kindness
وَكُنتَ مُصيبا فيَّ أَجراً وَمَصنَعا
O Abu Jaʿfar, why not cultivate my friendship,
O Abu Ja'far, why don't you make me your friend
And so earn a reward and do me a kindness?
And gain for yourself from me a reward and favor
فَكَمfor many a صاحِبfriend قَدhas جَلَّrisen above عَنbeyond قدرthe rank of صاحِبanother friend
فَكَم صاحِب قَد جَلَّ عَن قدر صاحِب
فَمَدَّthen he extended لَهُto him الأَسبابَthe ropes فَاِرتَفَعاand the two rose مَعاtogether
فَمَدَّ لَهُ الأَسبابَ فَاِرتَفَعا مَعا
For many a friend has risen above another in rank,
How many a friend has neglected a friend's worth
Then held out the ropes to him, and both rose together.
Stretching out to him means, so they rise together
