Listen to me: I confide my plight to you.

It is my tongue that reveals my innermost thoughts.

My tongue only reveals what’s in my heart

كَم أَخ لي كانَ مِنّي فَلَمّا

كَم أَخ لي كانَ مِنّي فَلَمّا

أَن رَأى الدَّهرَ جَفاني جَفاني

أَن رَأى الدَّهرَ جَفاني جَفاني

How many a brother of mine was close to me; and when

How many brothers I had, but when

He saw Time forsake me, he too forsook me.

They saw time turn against me, they turned against me

لَم يَرُعني مِنهُ إِلّا عَدُوّ

مُوتِرٌ نَحويَ قَوسَ الزَّمانِ

To my alarm, I found in him only an enemy,

No one cared for me except an enemy

Stringing Time's bow against me,

With his bow drawn toward me, ready to shoot

مُستَعِدٌّ لي بِسَهم فَلَمّا

مُستَعِدٌّ لي بِسَهم فَلَمّا

أَن رَأى الدَّهرَ رَماني رَماني

أَن رَأى الدَّهرَ رَماني رَماني

Ready with an arrow for me; and when

His arrow of fate at me, so when

He saw Time shoot at me, he too shot at me.

They saw time plotted against me, they plotted against me
