إِنّيindeed I اِغتَرَبتُI went abroad أُرَجّيI hope أَنto أَنالI attain غنىwealth
وَلَمand not أَكُنI was أَوّلَthe first الفِتيانthe young men مُغتَرِباaway from home
Indeed, I went abroad, hoping to gain wealth,
I migrated in hope of gaining wealth,
and I was not the first young man to leave his homeland.
Yet I was not the first youth to migrate.
فَإِنso if رَجَعتُI return وَلَمand not أَرجِعI return بِفائِدَةwith a gain
فَلَستُthen I am not أَوّلَthe first منone whom أَخطاهُeluded him ماwhat طَلَباhe sought
So if I return without any gain,
If I return without profiting,
then I am not the first to miss what he sought.
I'll not be the first one his quest betrayed.
وَكَيفَand how بِالرِّزقwith sustenance ليfor me أَمor كَيفhow يَجلِبُهbrings it
سَعيstriving إِذاif اللَّهُGod لَمnot يَجعَلprovides لهfor it سَبَباa means
And how can sustenance be mine, or how can it be brought
How can I earn a living, or how can it come to me
by striving, if God has provided no means for it?
When God did not destine for it a cause?
لَوif شاءَwilled رَبّيmy Lord أَقَمناwe stayed فيin مواطِنناour homelands
حَتّىuntil يَسوقHe drives إِلَيناto us رِزقَناour sustenance جَلَباbringing in
Had my Lord willed, we would have stayed in our homelands,
Had my Lord willed, we'd have stayed in our homelands
until He drove our sustenance to us, bringing it in,
Till sustenance flowed to us without our stir.
وَجاءand He brought بِالرِّزقِwith sustenance فيin خَفضease وَفيand in دَعَةrepose
وَلمand not نُعالِجwe endured لَهُfor it الأَسفارَjourneys وَالتَّعَباand toil
and brought sustenance in ease and repose,
And livelihood came to us in ease and plenty,
and we would not have endured journeys and toil for it.
Without the hardship of travel and toil.
مَهماwhatever رُزِقناهwe were granted it منof شَيءa thing سَيَطلُبُناwill seek us out
وَلاand not نُطيقwe are able لماfor what قَدalready فاتَناpassed us by طَلَباpursuit
Whatever we are allotted will seek us out,
Whatever we're granted, we shall seek more -
and we cannot pursue what has already passed us by.
Unable to endure the loss of what eluded our quest.
إِذاif سَلِمتُI remain unscathed لِعرضas regards honor لاnot أُدَنِّسهI stain it
فَماthen not أُباليI care أَجاءwhether it came الرِّزقsustenance أَمor ذَهَباit went away
If I remain unscathed in honor, never staining it,
If I safeguard my honor, untainted,
then I do not care whether sustenance comes or goes.
I care not whether provision comes or goes.
