فَإِن تَكُن الدُّنيا أَنالتكَ ثَروَة

فَإِن تَكُن الدُّنيا أَنالتكَ ثَروَة

فَأَصبَحتَ ذا يُسر وَقَد كُنتَ في عُسر

فَأَصبَحتَ ذا يُسر وَقَد كُنتَ في عُسر

If this world has bestowed riches upon you,

So if the world has bestowed wealth upon you,

And you have come into ease, though once you were in hardship,

And you have become prosperous, though you were in hardship,

لَقَد كَشَف الإِثراءُ عَنكَ مساوِيا

لَقَد كَشَف الإِثراءُ عَنكَ مساوِيا

مِن اللُّؤمِ كانَت تَحتَ ثَوب من الفَقر

مِن اللُّؤمِ كانَت تَحتَ ثَوب من الفَقر

Prosperity has indeed exposed vices in you—

Growing wealthy has indeed exposed your flaws,

Vices born of baseness, once hidden beneath poverty’s cloak.

Of baseness that lay beneath a garment of poverty.
