Are you standing firm, confident in your patience,
or submissive to time's misfortunes, resigned?
ياO مُؤذنيyou who inform me بِنَوىًof separation قَدindeed كُنتُI was آمَنُهاsafe from it
منكfrom you الفُراقparting وَمِنّيand from me الشَّوقlonging وَالأَسَفُand sorrow
O you who announce to me a parting I had felt safe from,
from you comes parting; from me, longing and sorrow.
أَودَعتَyou lodged قَلبِيَmy heart منfrom ذِكرmention الفُراقparting جَوىًburning grief
باتَتspent the night سواكنُstill parts منof قَلبيmy heart لَهُbecause of it تَجِفُquivering
You lodged in my heart a burning grief at the mention of parting;
what lay still within my heart trembled all night because of it.
لَمّاwhen اِنطَوَيتَyou settled inwardly عَلىupon عَزمa resolve بعثتَyou sent بِهِwith it
عَلَيّagainst me لِلدَّهرfor time يَوماًa day دونهbeneath it التَّلفُdeath
When you settled upon a resolve, with it you sent
against me a day of fate, worse than death.
طويتَyou folded هَمّاًsorrow بِقَلبin a heart قَدalready أُتيحwas allotted لَهُto it
حِمىsanctuary الهُمومsorrows وَعَينٌand an eye دَمعهاits tears يَكِفُdrip
You folded sorrow into a heart already allotted
the sanctuary of sorrows, and an eye whose tears drip.
أَحينis it when ذَلّتbecame submissive لِيَto me الأَيّامُthe days فَاِحتجزتand so withdrew
مِنّيfrom me حَوادِثُهاtheir calamities وَاِنقادَand yielded ليto me الأَنِفُthe haughty one
Was it when the days bowed to me, and there withdrew
from me their calamities, and the haughty yielded to me,
وَإِذand when رفعتَyou raised عَلىabove الأَعداءِthe enemies بيwith me سَبَباa means of ascent
أَخسُّthe lesser of يَومَيَّmy two days فيهِin it يَومa day أَنتَصِفُI gain redress
and when you raised me to a station above my enemies,
where the lesser of my two days was the day I won redress,
أشرعتَyou opened ليfor me مَورِداًa watering-place أَعيتproved too difficult مَصادِرُهits ways out
فَلَستُso I am not أَدريI know أَأَمضيshall I proceed? فيهِinto it أَمor أَقِفُI stand still
that you opened for me a watering-place whose ways out defied me?
So I do not know: shall I go on into it, or stand still?
