وَكُنتُ أُرَجّي أَنه حين يَلتَحي

وَكُنتُ أُرَجّي أَنه حين يَلتَحي

يُفَرِّج أَحزاني وَيُعقِبني صَبرا

يُفَرِّج أَحزاني وَيُعقِبني صَبرا

And I had hoped that when he grew a beard,

I hoped when we met

He would ease my sorrows and grant me patience in their place.

He'd lighten my sadness, and bless me with patience.

فَلَمّا التحى وَاسودّ عارِضُ خَدّه

فَلَمّا التحى وَاسودّ عارِضُ خَدّه

تَزايَدَت البَلوى لِواحدة عَشرا

تَزايَدَت البَلوى لِواحدة عَشرا

But when he grew a beard and the hair along his cheek turned black,

But when we met, his cheeks turned ashen,

Affliction increased tenfold.

And troubles on me increased tenfold.
