The sons of al-ʿAtqī mourned a flourishing branch;
The sons of Al-Atiqi lamented the loss of a flourishing branch,
his death set eyes streaming with sorrow.
Eyes shed tears of sorrow for his demise.
فيin الستِّsix وَالعشرينَand twenty حلَّsettled بِتُربةٍin a grave
في الستِّ وَالعشرينَ حلَّ بِتُربةٍ
وَالنَفسُand the soul أَدرَكَتِattained النَعيمَbliss الأَشرَفاthe most exalted
وَالنَفسُ أَدرَكَتِ النَعيمَ الأَشرَفا
At twenty-six, he came to rest in a grave,
On the twenty sixth he was laid to rest in the soil,
and his soul attained the most exalted bliss.
And his soul attained the most noble bliss.
وَلِذاand therefore كَتَبَتُI wrote مُؤرِّخاًrecording the date نَظميmy verse بِهاupon it
وَلِذا كَتَبَتُ مُؤرِّخاً نَظمي بِها
إِنindeed النَعيمَbliss صَفاbecame pure لِسمَعانَfor Simʿān الصَّفاal-Ṣafā
إِن النَعيمَ صَفا لِسمَعانَ الصَّفا
And so I inscribed my verse upon it as a chronogram:
Thus did I inscribe in my poetry as historian,
Indeed, bliss became pure for Simʿān al-Ṣafā.
That pure bliss was destined for Samaan Al-Safa.
