O one adorning my neck with the necklace of his verse,

And decking my hearing with the pearls of his words,

And delighting my gaze with the lustre of his ink,

When light shone forth within its darkness,

And awakening my mind with the beauty of his poetry,

While I am made dizzy by his magic and his wine—

I would ransom the crescent, full of light, who

At the outset of his appearance had attained fullness.

He gave me a bride of verse, who unveiled

A face beneath whose veil I saw beauty.

An Arab maiden came to me and stirred

In the clan, the youthful longing of its elder and its youth.

She poured forth longings that had not infected me,

Of those whose blazing heat she had indeed felt.

Longing surges at remembrance; then bends

My heart, captive to its passion and its sickness.

This is a love-stricken man's letter; through it he has sent

The fires of his longing and the coolness of his greeting.

The sheets of his manuscript were folded around my heart,

And the black of my eye was the musk of its seal.
