O beloved, whom distance has kept from me,

    And to whom loyalty and affection have drawn near;

And a man of letters whom excellence has exalted, and

In whose presence prose and verse have gained honor.

Every day I have a marvel from you, which leaves the

Eye and heart captive to its beauty.

And I see your elegant pages before me,

Like gardens the rains have visited at dawn.

Thus their breezes bring my soul repose,

And among their spreading trees I roam for pleasure.

So live long, ever gaining grace from

God, while your excellence makes the envious suffer.
