قَد سارَ ميخائيلُ حوّا راحِلاً

قَد سارَ ميخائيلُ حوّا راحِلاً

فَبَكَت عُيونُ الفَضلِ عِندَ مِضيِّهِ

فَبَكَت عُيونُ الفَضلِ عِندَ مِضيِّهِ

Mikha'il Hawwa has journeyed away,

Michael has journeyed far, departing steadfast;

So the eyes of virtue wept at his passing.

Eyes of merit wept at his leaving.

شَهمٌ قَضى أَسَفاً فَحَلَّ بتُربةٍ

شَهمٌ قَضى أَسَفاً فَحَلَّ بتُربةٍ

يَسقي ثَراها العَفو فَيضَ وَليِّهِ

يَسقي ثَراها العَفو فَيضَ وَليِّهِ

A noble man died of grief and came to rest in a grave,

Valiant, he suffered grief and settled in the dust;

Whose soil forgiveness waters with his guardian's bounty.

His grave is watered by the rain of his Master's clemency.

قَد قاومَ البَلوى بِصَبرِ ذَوي التُقَى

قَد قاومَ البَلوى بِصَبرِ ذَوي التُقَى

فَأَصابَ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَجرَ تَقيِّهِ

فَأَصابَ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَجرَ تَقيِّهِ

He withstood affliction with the patience of the devout,

He withstood tribulations with the patience of the pious,

And with God won the reward of His devout servant,

And with God has earned the reward of his piety,

حَتّى ثَوى أَرِّخ بِجَنَّةِ رَبِّهِ

حَتّى ثَوى أَرِّخ بِجَنَّةِ رَبِّهِ

وَهُناكَ ظلَّلهُ جَناحُ سميِّهِ

وَهُناكَ ظلَّلهُ جَناحُ سميِّهِ

Until he rested—record the date—in his Lord's Paradise,

Until he came to rest, hosted in his Lord's Paradise,

And there his namesake's wing shaded him.

Sheltered there beneath the wing of His Sublimity.
