May rain water every garden in Tripoli

That bespeaks a garden of excellence, fragrant of breath.

A garden whose soil the clouds of knowledge have watered

With every gushing shower, pouring down pearls.

    فَما نُبالي بِجَدبِ المَرَبعِ اليَبِسِ

    It grew and rose, bringing every wilderness to life;

So we care nothing for the barrenness of the parched pasture.

What a splendid society, soundly established, which has gathered

Upon its thread every noble, accomplished, discerning man,

From among all night-watchers whose chief desire

Lies among the retreating stars, not the gazelles in their coverts.

A people whose faces dispel the darkness, and from

Their thoughts, shooting stars stream in succession through the pre-dawn gloom.

Benefits flow from their pens, and through them

The thirsty have gained flowing water, unimpeded.

Thirst-quenching for every thirsty one, relief for the grieving,

Gain for the seeker, light for one seeking a flame.

They have renewed the ancient bloom of learning in

An age we see vying in glory with the age of al-Andalus,

In a town where the heights of its glory have left a trace

That has remained uneffaced through every age.

It rose high, and was not rivaled in its virtues

By any city in the lands of the Arabs and Persians.

So tell whoever ambitiously seeks its equal—record the date:

Every city has indeed fallen short of Tripoli.
