لَقَد ناحَ رُوفائيلُ فِرعون إِذ مَضَت

لَقَد ناحَ رُوفائيلُ فِرعون إِذ مَضَت

قَرينَتُهُ تَبغي سَعادَتها العُظمى

قَرينَتُهُ تَبغي سَعادَتها العُظمى

Indeed, Raphael Pharaon lamented when she departed—

Rufael mourned when Pharaoh's companion passed away

his wife, seeking her supreme bliss.

She who sought the greatest of fortunes

فَتاةٌ كَغُصنِ البانِ هَبَّت عَواصفٌ

فَتاةٌ كَغُصنِ البانِ هَبَّت عَواصفٌ

عَلَيها مِنَ الأَقدارِ فَاِنقَصَفَت ظُلما

عَلَيها مِنَ الأَقدارِ فَاِنقَصَفَت ظُلما

A young woman like a bough of the bān tree—tempests blew

A maiden like a tender branch, storms blew

upon her from fate, and so she was unjustly broken.

Upon her from the fates, so she was broken unfairly

أَذاقَت بَنِي الخَورِي مِنَ الحُزنِ جَمرةً

أَذاقَت بَنِي الخَورِي مِنَ الحُزنِ جَمرةً

وَذاقَ بَنُوها قَبلَ عَرفانِها اليُتْما

وَذاقَ بَنُوها قَبلَ عَرفانِها اليُتْما

She made the al-Khouri family taste an ember of grief,

She made the children of Khoury taste a burning grief

and her sons tasted orphanhood before they knew her.

And her children tasted orphanhood before knowing her

فَنادى لِسانُ الحالِ أَرِّخ تَصَبَّروا

فَنادى لِسانُ الحالِ أَرِّخ تَصَبَّروا

فَقَد أَصبَحَتْ أَسماءُ في المَنزل الأَسمى

فَقَد أَصبَحَتْ أَسماءُ في المَنزل الأَسمى

Then the tongue of circumstance cried: “Record the date: have patience,

So the tongue of fate proclaimed, record and be patient

for Asma is now in the loftiest abode.”

For Asma has come to dwell in the highest abode
