لِلّهِfor God (expressing admiration) عودٌa lute إِذاwhen أَوتارُهُits strings اِصطَفَّتare aligned
لِلّهِ عودٌ إِذا أَوتارُهُ اِصطَفَّت
مِنfor أَجلِهاtheir sake كُلevery عرقٍvein راحَbegan مصطَفِقاthrobbing
مِن أَجلِها كُل عرقٍ راحَ مصطَفِقا
How wondrous a lute! When its strings are aligned,
The lute of God, when its strings are rightly strung
every vein begins throbbing for their sake.
For it each vein has throbbed with fervent love
كَأَنَّهاas though they were فَوقَهُupon it أَوتارُcords حُنجَرةٍa throat
كَأَنَّها فَوقَهُ أَوتارُ حُنجَرةٍ
فَلَوso, if أَصابَit found فَماًa mouth فيwithin جَوفِهِits hollow نَطَقاit would have spoken
فَلَو أَصابَ فَماً في جَوفِهِ نَطَقا
As though the strings upon it were a throat’s vocal cords;
As though above the lute were vocal chords
so, had it found a mouth within its hollow, it would have spoken.
That, through its inner heart, would speak if touched
