أَمسى فَرنسيسُ الكَريمَ بِمَضجَعٍ

أَمسى فَرنسيسُ الكَريمَ بِمَضجَعٍ

مَطَرت عَلَيهِ مَراحِمُ الغفارِ

مَطَرت عَلَيهِ مَراحِمُ الغفارِ

Francis the generous now lies in a resting place;

Noble Franciscolay in his final repose,

Upon him have rained the mercies of the All-Forgiving.

Bathed in the mercies of the All-Forgiving.

شَهمٌ مَضى عَن آلِ مسكَ فَظَلَّلَت

شَهمٌ مَضى عَن آلِ مسكَ فَظَلَّلَت

بَيروتُ فيهِ سَحابَةُ الأَكدارِ

بَيروتُ فيهِ سَحابَةُ الأَكدارِ

A gallant man departed from the Misk family, and a shadow was cast

A valiant knight has left the progeny of musk,

Over Beirut, for his loss, by a cloud of sorrows.

And Beirut was swathed in clouds of sorrow.

ناحَت لِمَصرَعِهِ الفَضائلُ مِثلَما

ناحَت لِمَصرَعِهِ الفَضائلُ مِثلَما

بَكَتِ العفاةُ بِدَمعِها المِدرارِ

بَكَتِ العفاةُ بِدَمعِها المِدرارِ

The virtues lamented his death, just as

At his demise, virtues mourned as copiously

The alms-seekers wept with their streaming tears.

As the innocent wept with flowing tears.

قَد نالَ أَجرَ ذَوي البَلايا إِذ مَضى

قَد نالَ أَجرَ ذَوي البَلايا إِذ مَضى

مُتَصَبِّراً لَهِجاً بِشُكرِ الباري

مُتَصَبِّراً لَهِجاً بِشُكرِ الباري

He indeed earned the reward of the afflicted when he passed away,

He gained the reward of the long-suffering, having passed

Patiently enduring, constantly giving thanks to the Creator.

With thanks extolling the Creator on his tongue.

وَلِذاكَ أَدرَكَ في مَراتعِ رَبِّهِ

وَلِذاكَ أَدرَكَ في مَراتعِ رَبِّهِ

أَرَّخَتُ حَظَّ سَعادةِ الأَبرارِ

أَرَّخَتُ حَظَّ سَعادةِ الأَبرارِ

Thus he attained, in his Lord's pastures,

And so he attained, in his Lord's meadows,

—I mark the date—a share in the bliss of the righteous.

The bliss allotted to the righteous.
