مُقَلٌ في دُجى العَرورِ نِيامُ

مُقَلٌ في دُجى العَرورِ نِيامُ

وَحَياةٌ جَميعُها أَحلامُ

وَحَياةٌ جَميعُها أَحلامُ

Eyes lie asleep in the darkness of delusion,

Drowsy in the gloom of nights, slumbering,

and life is entirely dreams.

And life entirely a dream,

كُلُّ عَينٍ تَحتَ الظَلامِ وَلَكن

كُلُّ عَينٍ تَحتَ الظَلامِ وَلَكن

بَدَّلَ الحلمُ ما أَجنَّ الظَلامُ

بَدَّلَ الحلمُ ما أَجنَّ الظَلامُ

Every eye lies beneath darkness, yet

Every eye in the darkness, yet

the dream has altered what darkness concealed.

Dreams have changed what darkness wrought.

رَقدةٌ طالَ عَهدُها فَتَلَتها

رَقدةٌ طالَ عَهدُها فَتَلَتها

رَقدةٌ لَم يَكُن يَليها اِنصِرامُ

رَقدةٌ لَم يَكُن يَليها اِنصِرامُ

A slumber whose duration grew long was followed by

A sleep whose age was prolonged that ended it

a slumber never to be followed by an end.

A sleep that had no ending after it,

هام كُلٌّ بِعَيشِهِ وَالمَنايا

هام كُلٌّ بِعَيشِهِ وَالمَنايا

راصِداتٌ حَولَ النُفوسِ قِيامُ

راصِداتٌ حَولَ النُفوسِ قِيامُ

Each was enamored of his life, while deadly fates

Each busied with their life while death

stood watchful around the souls.

Stands guard around souls awake.

قَصُرَ العُمرُ تَحتَ طُولِ رَجاءٍ

قَصُرَ العُمرُ تَحتَ طُولِ رَجاءٍ

شَرَدَت في مَجالِهِ الأَوهامُ

شَرَدَت في مَجالِهِ الأَوهامُ

Life grew short beneath long hope,

Life was cut short under length of hope,

in whose expanse illusions strayed.

Imaginations strayed in its expanse.

لَو أَرادَ الفَتى قَضاءَ أَماني

لَو أَرادَ الفَتى قَضاءَ أَماني

هِ لَضاقَت مِن دونِها الأَيَّامُ

هِ لَضاقَت مِن دونِها الأَيَّامُ

If a young man wished to fulfill his wishes,

Had the youth wanted to fulfill his wishes,

the days would fall short of attaining them.

Days would have been too narrow for it.

كُلُّ يَومٍ تَعِلَّةٌ شابها الشَّكْ

كُلُّ يَومٍ تَعِلَّةٌ شابها الشَّكْ

كُ وَما لا يُشكُّ فيهِ الحِمامُ

كُ وَما لا يُشكُّ فيهِ الحِمامُ

Each day is a solace tainted by doubt,

Each day a renewed pretext that resembled doubt,

and what admits no doubt is death.

What pigeons have no doubt in.

تَحتَ هَذا الرُّغامِ مِنهُ رِجالٌ

تَحتَ هَذا الرُّغامِ مِنهُ رِجالٌ

وَعَلَيهِ مِن رِجالٍ رغامُ

وَعَلَيهِ مِن رِجالٍ رغامُ

Beneath this dust lie men made of it,

Under this soil some men lie

and upon it lies dust made of men.

While over it men's soil lie.

وَاِستَوى المَيتُ وَالتُرابُ وَبَين ال

وَاِستَوى المَيتُ وَالتُرابُ وَبَين ال

مَيتِ وَالحَيِّ نسبةٌ وَالتِئامُ

مَيتِ وَالحَيِّ نسبةٌ وَالتِئامُ

And the dead and the dust became alike; between the

The dead leveled with dust, and between

dead and the living lie kinship and union.

The dead and alive a connection and pact.

أَيُّها الراحلُ الَّذي سارَ عَنَّا

أَيُّها الراحلُ الَّذي سارَ عَنَّا

نَحوَ عَرشٍ قَد طابَ فيهِ المُقامُ

نَحوَ عَرشٍ قَد طابَ فيهِ المُقامُ

O departed one, who journeyed away from us

O you who left from us

toward a throne where it is sweet to dwell,

To a dominion made good for stay

وَتَوارى بِالجسمِ في ظلِّ لَحدٍ

وَتَوارى بِالجسمِ في ظلِّ لَحدٍ

نَحلت بَعَد مَن بِهِ الأَجسامُ

نَحلت بَعَد مَن بِهِ الأَجسامُ

and vanished in body into a grave's shadow—

And the body was concealed in shade of a grave

bodies wasted away after the loss of the one within it.

You gained after what bodies contest.

إِن فيهِ حبَّ القُلوب فَهَل تَن

إِن فيهِ حبَّ القُلوب فَهَل تَن

بِتُه فَوقك الدُموعُ السِجامُ

بِتُه فَوقك الدُموعُ السِجامُ

Indeed, within it lies the hearts' beloved seed; will

In it lies hearts' love. Do tears

the streaming tears make it sprout above you?

Still spill over you, you honorable one?

يا لَكَ اللَهُ ما أَثَرتَ مِن الحُز

يا لَكَ اللَهُ ما أَثَرتَ مِن الحُز

ن وَفي المَوت وِردُ ما لا يُرامُ

ن وَفي المَوت وِردُ ما لا يُرامُ

Ah, God be with you! What grief you have stirred,

O how you have left a trace of sadness,

and in death lies a draught that none desires.

And in death lies what is not hoped for.

لا رَعى اللَهُ لَيلةً بِكَ أَودَت

لا رَعى اللَهُ لَيلةً بِكَ أَودَت

فَاِكتَسَت مِن سَوادِها الأَقوامُ

فَاِكتَسَت مِن سَوادِها الأَقوامُ

May God not protect the night that took you away,

God did not watch a night against you that

whereupon peoples clothed themselves in its blackness.

Made communities don its darkness.

قَد رَمى قَلبَكَ الحِمامُ بِسَهمٍ

قَد رَمى قَلبَكَ الحِمامُ بِسَهمٍ

كَثُرَت مِنهُ في القُلوبِ الكُلومُ

كَثُرَت مِنهُ في القُلوبِ الكُلومُ

Death has struck your heart with an arrow,

Your heart was struck by an arrow from love

from which wounds multiplied in hearts.

Causing many a heart to have adhesions.

فَتَرَكَتَ الحَياةَ طَوعاً وَلَم يش

فَتَرَكَتَ الحَياةَ طَوعاً وَلَم يش

غَلْكَ قَبلاً بِها حُسناً مُستَهامُ

غَلْكَ قَبلاً بِها حُسناً مُستَهامُ

So you willingly left life, nor had

So you freely left life and no

one enamored of beauty ever engrossed you in it.

Passion for it possessed you before.

لَم تَزَل ناظِراً إَلَيها بِعَينٍ

لَم تَزَل ناظِراً إَلَيها بِعَينٍ

هِيَ في جَفنِها قَذىً وَسَقامُ

هِيَ في جَفنِها قَذىً وَسَقامُ

You never ceased looking upon it with an eye

You continued looking at it with an eye

in whose lid it was a mote and a malady.

In whose eyelid were specks and sickness.

وَتَرَحَّلتَ نَحوَ رَبِّكَ تَبغِي

وَتَرَحَّلتَ نَحوَ رَبِّكَ تَبغِي

عِندَهُ الخُلدَ وَالحَياةُ لِمامُ

عِندَهُ الخُلدَ وَالحَياةُ لِمامُ

And you journeyed toward your Lord, seeking

And you journeyed to your Lord, seeking

immortality with Him, while life is a fleeting visit.

Near Him eternity, and life is perfected.

ما تَفِي بَعدَكَ الشُجونُ وَلَكن

ما تَفِي بَعدَكَ الشُجونُ وَلَكن

تِلكَ مِما اِقتَضى الهَوى وَالذِّمامُ

تِلكَ مِما اِقتَضى الهَوى وَالذِّمامُ

Sorrows after your departure cannot suffice, yet

No grief remains after you, but

they are part of what love and loyal duty require.

That is what love and infatuation required.

غَلَّ مِنكَ الرَّدى بَناناً نَضاهُ ال

غَلَّ مِنكَ الرَّدى بَناناً نَضاهُ ال

بِرُّ قَبلاً وَالمُكرَماتُ العِظامُ

بِرُّ قَبلاً وَالمُكرَماتُ العِظامُ

Death fettered fingers of yours, once bared by

Loss took away a gentle, pure youth,

kindness and mighty acts of generosity.

Honored before in favors and nobilities.

وَعَلا ذاتِكَ الكَريمةُ تُربٌ

وَعَلا ذاتِكَ الكَريمةُ تُربٌ

قَد عَلاهُ الإِجلالُ وَالإكرامُ

قَد عَلاهُ الإِجلالُ وَالإكرامُ

And dust covered your noble self,

Your noble self transcended dust

itself covered with reverence and honor.

Elevated by reverence and honor.

فَعَلى قَبرِكَ السَحائبُ تَجري

فَعَلى قَبرِكَ السَحائبُ تَجري

وَعَلى نَفسِكَ الرِضى وَالسَلامُ

وَعَلى نَفسِكَ الرِضى وَالسَلامُ

So may clouds flow over your grave,

So over your grave clouds flow,

and may favor and peace rest upon your soul.

And over your soul satisfaction and peace.
