أَنto يُجزيrepay مِنfrom حَشاهُhis heart بِالَّذيfor what فَعَلاit did
أَن يُجزي مِن حَشاهُ بِالَّذي فَعَلا
All a grieving man can do, when fate's calamity descends,
is repay it, from his heart, for what it has done,
وَيَبتَلِيand afflict مُقلَتَيهِhis two eyes بِالبُكاwith weeping وَكَفىand sufficient

and afflict his two eyes with weeping; enough
of a warning is one who wept before us, if only one would heed him.

Lovers found solace after despair, and made
those sorrows paths toward their consolation.

Loss imposed sorrow upon a man, so he wept,
and sorrow required patience afterward, so he found solace.

the day whose dawn brought news of my beloved's death,
so I thought the morning sun was Saturn in my eye.

a form that appears as a phantom, never departing.

a washing from a cloud of tears that poured down over it.
