A tale has told of the Arab nation

what is never forgotten through days and ages:

noble deeds already inscribed in the register of glory—

had they been given their due, the chroniclers would have inscribed them in gold.

They are the men, the men of glory; their memory

endures through the ages, in mouths and books.

Men of distinction in valor and generosity,

and masters of poetry, sayings, and oratory.

How many a gathering thronged with them of old, and how often

their legacies enlivened a gathering among non-Arabs and Arabs.

We kept exchanging every remarkable tale about them,

never without instruction for a person, or delight,

until their figures appeared before us, and then

every imagination felt the greatest wonder on their account.

On a night when dreams had no resting place

there, nor had the eye any desire for slumber,

we spent the night beholding bygone men of a company long departed,

as though they had been resurrected from time-worn dust.

Then they vanished; and to God is the return, and nothing

remains but His blessed face behind the veils.

God bless the man who unfolded this mantle,

who gave noble excellence its due in merit and letters.

His hand has renewed for us the embroidery of the past,

and indeed, wine has a quality not found in grapes.
