    فَجَرى عَليهِ الدَمعُ مِثلَ العَندَمِ

    A grave where an illustrious man, noble among his people, rests;

    So tears flowed over it like crimson dye.

    A gallant man who died—by God—departing for

    The abode of happiness, amid supreme bliss.

    And he went to God, the All-Forgiving, seeking

    From His overflowing pardon the best that could be sought.

    Of the house of Tasso, among the noblest of a people

    Who won a glory held in honor among humankind.

    فَهَوى وَلَكن ذِكرُهُ لَم يهدمِ

    In him, time brought down a pillar of his community;

    So he fell, and yet his memory was not destroyed.

    And indeed he settled in a resting place, where he is

    A treasure that became its dust’s most precious prize.

    Then his chronicler came early, calling out:

    Glad tidings to you, O grave—so rejoice!
