You comforted me with alluring hope,

O you who make me desolate with a hostile glance.

Why do I see my palm filled

and send dew down upon the flowers,

and unite the soil with rain

when the earth thirsts for rainfall,

and string upon the thread of this darkness

    necklaces of these bright stars,

or his voice has flowed into my hearing

like sweet water flowing in pools,

What use, then, is life to me today?

or the sun's rim when it appears

among clouds, its scattered rays faint [uncertain reading].
