Whatever I forget, I shall not forget the days I enjoyed

    in his shade, both of us laughing with delight;

nor his words to me, with coyness and reproach,

when he saw me distracted from the evening company:

“Ah, may God smite love’s obsessive whisperings, and what

they have clothed you in of sorrow’s handiwork and burning longing!

Set the snares for which you are known,

for your poetry is magic, potent in its working.

What do you seek in bowing your head, when

the faces of our night smile upon hope’s radiant brow?

Here is the wine, and this cup is brimming:

drink, then come, give me the cup to drink, without ceremony.

Did I not forbid you this? Indeed, by my father,

I shall lavish chastisement on you for your missteps!”

My soul be your ransom, aloof one with whom I am enamored,

who gave me honey to drink in our early days!

And a night, black as the darkness of despair,

without stars, without a full moon, without flames:

I went through it to him, without lingering,

longing urging me onward without delay.

I said, “I am a guest who wants no hospitality

except conversation—and you are not miserly.”

I kept recounting fanciful tales and letting him hear

my heart’s story, falsely ascribed to those of old.

It pleased me that, in what I told him

about them, I could tell him without fear:

“I love you with an overwhelming, frightened love,

chaste—and I have no strength to bear this love.

    It is neither bold nor naive enough for me to deceive it;

its two portions are understanding and shyness.”

He said, “Woe to you! Either you are deranged,

or you amuse yourself with assorted foolishness.”

I said, “You are not mistaken: madness and frivolity are in me,

from the aches and ailments that have struck me.

In my heart is a blaze without smoke,

and the most malignant fire is that which hides from eyes.

In my veins are [poisons], with no soothing for them,

and in my eye sockets are tears that do not fall.

Do not let my laughter deceive you when you see me:

it is the mockery of a heart with few resources.

A person laughs from despair and from delight,

and you may see embroidery on shrouds as well as robes.

How often my heart intended to speak plainly, yet said nothing,

and my tears intended to pour forth, yet did not flow!

Time poured liquid fire into my heart,

and my tears dried within it—alas for their moisture!

If you can, make flow the tears that have tormented me:

healing lies in the streaming of a tear-wet eye.”

He could not, and wept in my stead—oh, my sorrow!

Would that what poured from his eyes were allotted to me!

    I remember well a happy day with him;

its beauty still leaves me like a drunken drinker.

The sun was sinking, until you would have thought

it had fled in panic before the armies of night.

The Nile flowed as we flow toward our appointed end,

and everything in this world moves toward its term.

After a silence whose terror I feared, he said:

“Look at the sun in a robe of twilight.”

I answered, teasing him—solemnity is ruin,

and the finest words are those that dispel boredom:

“Before you, the sun that has set captivated

the lord of the seas with their roaring crests.

Do you not know that the sun is his wife,

seeking him beneath the veil of night and dusk?”

He said, “Do not babble, fellow, merely to make us laugh.

By my Lord, a taint of derangement has overtaken you!

Are you still youthful of mind and reckless in it,

yet a veteran of impudence, springing toward madness?

Is no conversation too dignified for jesting,

and will your mind’s rashness never outgrow it?”

    I said, “By God, I am telling no lie;

rather, you are in a night of ignorance.

Ask the fishermen about the two: have they heard,

in night’s blackness, as I have, the ringing of kisses?

Sometimes, in summer, her lingering rouses him,

and he pours his wrath in a shower of reproaches.”

I kept laughing at him while he scolded me,

until the night was spent, neither short nor long.

Would that all lovers, like the sun,

had married fire to the water of closeness and wooing!

And a day when I told him, my teeth smiling,

my eyes fixed, my heart bereaved:

“I have resolved to leave you, never to return.”

He said, “No: you are a shadow that never moves.”

I said, “Good tidings! But I am bound on a journey.

Who has remained like the Pole Star, never shifting?”

He said, “To al-Sham?” I said, “Al-Sham is enchanting:

its gardens, and its heaven of large, lovely eyes.

But I am neither reckless nor rash,

and I am no good at cursing religion and creeds.”

He said, “By my life, what a sorry jester you are

in every matter—and what a bad trait in a man!”

I said, “Woe is me! I desire no death,

but life; and I am no hero.

In al-Sham are glances that offer no safety,

guarded by every man bold enough to face death.

But contemplate all the stars of night:

where is my star [among] the encamped stars?

I think it has lost its way among the shooting stars,

like me on earth among the hollows and peaks.”

    وما ضللت ولكن شيمة الملل

    O you who turn away, you are my star, vanished from my sight;

you have not strayed—it is only your habit of growing weary.

In my eyes you are shimmering lights,

and in my heart, the coolness of a cloud pouring rain.

You are my crown of immortality, in which I glory,

and I have no need of wild roses or clover.

By night you are an unbroken dream,

and in the morning, a resolve that does not endure.

You are Gabriel, inspiring me, and I compose in verse what

you inspire of radiant verses and sentences.

Among us you are beauty’s prophet—no lie—

and an envoy of mirth, among the most eloquent messengers.

If you have thought of abandonment and distance,

you dwell within my heart, never departing.

Do not let the beauty you wear deceive you:

whoever wears adornment in this world ends stripped of it.

O flower of beauty, let its luster not deceive you:

spring is short in life and span.

Dew, the very life of flowers, harms them,

and love flows freely for beauty, not as a meager trickle.

So guard your beauty, if you wish, within veils,

and bury it, if you wish, in a grave of ignorance.

Our acceptance is no choice—of what is imposed on us

by love’s vicissitudes—yet you heap on reproaches.
