والليلand the night فيهin it الظلامthe darkness يلتطمclashes
We count his breaths and tally them.
We count his breaths and tally them
And in the night, darkness crashes against itself.
As the night with darkness collides

When life's departure exhausts him,
If life's departure exhausts him
Steady rains fall from his brow.
Blood trickles down from his temples

A chest, turbulent like the breast of the sea;
A chest as restless as the tide
Death's legions crowd within it.
Death's legions within it reside
إنif قامhe rises ملناwe incline لهtoward him بمسمعناwith our ear
أوor نامhe sleeps خفتgrew light بوطئناwith our tread القدمthe foot

If he rises, we incline our ears toward him;
Were he to rise, heeding our call
Or if he sleeps, our feet tread lightly.
Or sleep, hushed by our soft tread

Hope takes fright at his long sleep,
Hope starts, fretting his sleep so long
And hope and weariness complain of it.
As yearning and ennui take their toll

As though fear, in its wavering,
Our lingering fear of his silence
Were horses with bridles made of our hope.
Like steeds our hopes cannot stem

We thought him dead, though he was dozing,
We left him, dead, in his prime
And thought his eyelids asleep, though death had taken him.
Asleep, though aged and eyes dim

His death had drawn back his lips,
His smile in death seems to say
As though he were smiling at death.
He smiles like a dove about to fly
