O rose, whose fragrance is abundant,

And whose lovers' sorrow is long.

The sight of her sets the breast aflame,

    And beauty stirs the soul.

Ah, for her beauty! And ah,

If only it would breathe fragrance upon the parched lover!

And how can admiration help a lovesick man,

With despair lodged in his heart?

Yet it is forbidden for eyes

To behold beauty and remain unmoved.

Have you not been told, my beloved,

By the gauntness of my face and my wasting,

That I am a reticent lover,

Who harbors something other than what he says?

Or do you wish my endurance to fail,

So that my forbearing heart should complain?

Nor is it strange for refuge to be sought by the

wounded, or for the ailing to seek a remedy.

But there is proud reserve in my tongue,

And people's temperaments take many forms.

God made my mouth for nothing but

sighing; so let the faultfinder rejoice.
