O rose of former beauty,
O rose of ancient beauty,
And thorn of newfound ugliness!
And thorn of new ugliness,
كناwe were وكنتand you were فماso not عدلتI turned away
ولاnor ظلمتكI wronged you بالصدورby withdrawing
We were, and you were; I did not turn away,
We were, and you were, yet you did not act fairly,
Nor wrong you by withdrawing.
Nor did you oppress me by turning away.
قدonce كنتI used to أهوىlove أنto أراكsee you
وأنand to أشمكsmell you كالورودlike roses
I once loved to see you,
I had loved to see you,
And breathe your scent like roses.
And smell you like roses,

But thorns repelled me, brandishing
But the thorns of your veil pricked me,
Their sharp point before the cheeks,
Keeping me from your cheeks.
ظلماًunjustly كماas قتلslew الحينdoom (likely a textual error for Husayn)
علىin ظميmy thirst (text uncertain) جندtroops اليزيدof Yazid
Unjustly, as [Husayn] was slain,
Unjustly, like the murder of Hayyan
In [thirst], by Yazid's troops.
By the army of Yazid on my thirsty abode.
فالآنso now إذsince ذهبdeparted الجمالbeauty
وصوحand withered الزمنthe time الحميدpleasant
So now, since beauty has departed,
Now that beauty has departed,
And the happy days have withered,
And the blessed days have faded,
وسلاand found solace الفؤادthe heart فلاso no حنينlonging
And the heart has found solace, there is no longing,
And passion in my heart is stilled, no yearning,
Nor weeping, nor sleepless vigil.
No weeping or laments,
وارتدand turned back طرفيmy gaze عنfrom ذواكyour withering

My gaze has turned away from your withering,
My gaze has turned from you,
And far-reaching hope has ceased.
And distant hope has shortened,

I am called the esteemed al-Mazini,
I call upon al-‘Aziz al-Mazini,
And am not blamed for the verse.
No regrets for this poem.

Passion departed with beauty,
Passion has gone with beauty,
Despite my saying it would not perish.
Despite my saying it will not perish,
ليسis not الخلودimmortality لذيfor one possessing الحياةlife

Immortality is not for the living;
Immortality is not for the living,
Rather, extinction itself is eternity.
Rather destruction is eternity,

Woe to the one with fresh beauty
Woe to you of peerless beauty,
From time and what it schemes!
From time and its machinations,

Either you increased in beauty and found,
Still more ugliness.
More ugliness added,

Time schemed against you as
You plotted against one whose heart was love-stricken.
You schemed against the stalwart heart,

So congratulate the hair on your cheeks,
As though it were an unerring arrow.
Like a sure arrow,

O denier of God’s grace upon you, cursed is he of malice,
Upon himself—woe to you, ingrate!
