O my dear friends, welcome and peace!

How fine a night that gathers us in harmony,

Amid a cup and brothers—and how fine

A night amid brothers and wine!

This spring came smiling, and you came

Like it, after a long spell of clouds.

So its Lord watered the earth, and my ailing

Heart drank its fill through all the days.

So gardens of spring are all around,

And gardens of our ever-smiling affection.

And by my life, without you we would care nothing

For gardens whose buds open in a smile.

And spring's gardens are green, but

You are their roses, intensely sweet-scented.

A friend may smell in the fragrant breath of brothers

What he cannot smell in drops of gentle rain.

You, my brothers, are my spring—not that one,

For time does not remain for long.

Spring will never leave my life, so long as you offer

Sincere affection, or honor your bond with me.

Affection brought us together, so we put on

An ample robe over our bodies.

This night of mine—its radiance can well

Make the heart yearn for darkness.

And nights, when they come to you with kindness

And delight, make you hope for bounty.

So let there be a return to something like this,

After days of respite and repose.

To me, night and day are alike

When you appear in the blackness of night.

And if you return, I shall be truly grateful,

Spreading my thanks in noble rhymes.

So make the most of that tongue, for

Dominion belongs to tongues eloquent in speech.
