    O flower of ill fortune and misery,

    And rose of distress and cares,

    Your souls breathe forth death,

    And poisons lie within your dewdrops.

    Vipers roam around you,

    Their fangs sharpened against bliss.

    يا فرحة الدود بالرميم

    Life is a grave, and you are worms;

    Oh, the worms' delight in decaying remains!

    The day grows rusty from it, until

    We take it for our pitch-black night.

    فكيف ينجاب أو يريم

    And night is blinded by its impact;

    So how can it lift or depart?

    فالنفس من شرها عقيم

    Thought bears no fruit where it grows;

    For the soul is barren from its evil.

    It leaves a struggle within the breast,

    As foes have clashed with spears.

    So if they shatter within a heart,

    What the breast harbors perishes.

    As though we avenge the nights

    Upon youth, though it does not endure.

    It kindles a fire beneath the ribs,

    Its food is the soul and bodies.

    Alas for love! How can one reap

    This hell from beauty's garden?

    Alas for people! Would they sing

    Of hatred, if the vile could be praised?

    And there is nothing in hatred to cause concern,

    And its trouble is not great.
