My trusted brother, as my soul rose in revolt,
My brother, as my soul rose in revolt,
it burdens me with torment beyond what I can bear.
It burdened me with more than I can bear of injustice,

And am I but the bearer of a breast that, when it seethes,
Am I not just the lord of a chest, when it boils,
makes me feel an arrow's sting from its pounding pulse?
I feel like an arrow from the intensity of throbbing?

I have worn time's robe for twenty years
I wore the gown of time for twenty pilgrimages,
and two more, O Shawqi—when this mantle is cast off—
And two, O Shauqi, when I took off this coat.

Turning away from the world and whoever does not find in it,
fulfillment for his hopes consoles himself with renunciation.
A purpose for hopes covers with asceticism.

They neither strike my heart dead when they shoot,
So it does not cool my heart when it shoots,
nor ever desist from their hatred.
Nor does it stop harassing even for a day.

I pass the night as though my heart were a ruined cave
I resist as if my heart is a demolished cave,
on a lofty summit, a playground for the wind;
With a bent entrance where the winds can play.

or as though I were a rock in the sea of misfortunes,
Or as if I were amidst the sea of events, a rock,
to which the waves [cling] as they churn.
Pounded by waves as it tosses and turns.

I turn about with an eye whose gaze life has bewildered,
I look with confused eyes at the blink of life,
and bring it back reddened like anemones.
And return it blushed like anemones.

As though my heart, between sorrow and grief,
It’s as if my heart is between grief and respite,
were a hide rent by the hands of leather-cutters.
A leather skin beaten by the hands of fate.

I keep my grudge in my heart and see,
way to quench the heat of grief within my breast.
No way to extinguish the burning ember in my chest.

I wrestle with a soul that, most likely,
I treat a soul which I highly suspect,
will waste away in sighs over fate.
Will expire breaths over time.

When my eyes close, my heart stays awake;
When I close my eyes, my heart stays awake,
all the long night it watches and keeps vigil.
Remaining alert all night watching and waiting.

It’s not that I sleep while my eyes do, but I imagine,
turning its gaze through my heart as I lie down.
They take a glance at my heart when I rest.

Of what use is it that groves are beautifully adorned,
radiant with blossoms, their birds cooing?
Lit up and peaceful with birds?

when my heart is sleepless through all time?
When my heart remains awake for ages?

A breeze restores breath for a moment to one who inhales it—
A breeze comforts the soul for a moment when it blows,
yet what burning thirst and scorching heat follow!
But what nights follow it with their pains?

The plants' shadows stretch long while the sun is a child;
The shadows of plants lengthen and the sun seems like a child,
but once she grows earnest, they become very short.
But when it moves south the days shorten.

I shall spend my life with my soul in revolt, raging;
I will live my life with a restless agitated soul,
and where could I find escape from that, a way out?
And where can I find about that a refuge and shelter?

Men's suffering is in proportion to their sensitivity,
According to men’s capacity to feel is their misery,
and happiness has an atmosphere steeped in dullness.
While good fortune has an aura of apathy.

My two friends, gently—may God bless you both!
My friend wait, may God bless you,
For night's stillness offers no [solace] to one who grieves.
For the still of night does not amuse me much,

When what lies between reason—between it and the breast—erupts,
When whatever is between Hijaz and Hasha stirs,
then every stillness rouses what slumbers within me.
Every stillness arouses my vigilance.

If my soul calms down, it does not bother me,

Winds that drag their tails around me and gust.

It does not harm the whale in the sea that,
rages and its waves surge and grow violent.
It is stirred and the waves surge and swell.
