My heart is barren of hopes in life,

and my sky is black-edged and frowning.

The days pass me by as though they were

white pages turned before the eyes,

as though Time had written no lines upon them

to keep a person all night floating and sinking.

Life's past engrosses me, heedless of every present moment,

as though I had attained what I used to seek.

The days have not wearied of their headlong running,

nor has a grievous calamity halted the celestial spheres.

Destiny has never ceased to execute its decree,

nor have Time's vicissitudes ceased to give and take away.

The face of the earth still holds, throughout its reaches,

recreation for whoever seeks it, and a playground.

But a heart assailed by its cares—

what pleasant diversion, do you think, does it not shun?

How could diversion or delight console it,

when nothing entices it but what it spends the night lamenting?

Once the world held a sweetness for my soul,

but its hurts and reversals have made me weary of it.

The breeze once moved me when it stirred,

and the doves' cooing pleased and delighted me.

The slumber of light at evening enchanted me

upon the pools' surface, as their waters flowed.

What ails me? May God send rain upon youth and its folly!

I see myself as though I were drinking my own blood.

And what ails me? As though a cloud had overshadowed me,

and lo, its fringe is fearsome black serpents!

And on a night when the wind was like mourning women

over stars swallowed by its darkness,

answered from the sea's side by the deep,

    where its leaping waves roared,

as though the demons of darkness, within its hide,

sang to me to the winds' piping, in strange strains,

I met there a man possessed by madness and bewilderment,

with a tearful eye and a tormented heart.

I said to him, 'Alas for you! How I grieve!

Where, I wonder, do night travel and wandering abroad take you?

    You have ridden the darkness, and night is the roughest mount;

have you, alas, something to seek from night?'

He said, with a terrifying gleam in his eyes

and a shudder and trembling on his lips:

'Let the dust that embraced your beauty rejoice, for

a streaming rain-cloud shall water it with its rain.

May a generous cloud water her and slake my thirst,

for I shall vanish into her grave.

Enough for me, when my breast embraces hers,

is a greeting from clouds whose heart is aflame.

Will you aid me, if I die, with a tear

that pity for us draws down and sheds?'

I said to him, 'At calamity I have no tear

to shed, nor a heart that softens and feels compassion.

I have grown still; I no longer know how a young man fares,

as sorrows now treat him in earnest, now toy with him.

But if my tears do not help you,

I shall dread the death you have spent the night courting.

When the wind rages, I shall utter a scream

at which the dead will say, "Ah, where can we flee?"'
