يغذhastens بنفسيwith my soul للبوارtoward ruin ويوجفand speeds onward
My despair will gnaw at me, and wasting sickness will overpower me;
My despair will make me sweat, and my stinginess will defeat me,
Driving my soul toward ruin and hurrying it onward.
It feeds my soul to ruin and dries me up.
فلاso do not تنفسواbegrudge شعراًverse علىupon (apparently 'upon me' intended) مفوفاrichly patterned
لهit has لوif علمتمyou knew جانبa side متخوفto be feared
So do not begrudge me richly patterned verse:
So do not recite poetry about one who is covered in dust,
It has, if you knew, a side to be feared.
If you knew his frightened side.

Just as these winds have woven clouds,
Just as these winds composed clouds,
Clad in the setting sun's bordered brocade,
That have an evening glow from the sunset and a fine drizzle

What gathers them harbors a force that threatens to tear them apart,
Threatening it with that which tears it to shreds
And what adorns them harbors what melts and destroys them.
And that which melts and ruins it.

ويجنيand reaps سواناothers than us ماwhat نشورwe gather honey ونقطفand we pluck
God help us, a people who dissolve our souls,
We have a God who melts our souls
While others reap what we gather and pluck.
And reaps our livelihood, what we sow and harvest.
ويصدبرand depart (probable reading) عناfrom us الناسpeople رياquenched قلوبهمtheir hearts
ونحنwhile we عطاشthirsty بينهمamong them نتلهفwe ache with longing
And people leave us with their hearts' thirst quenched,
And turns people's hearts away from us,
While we, thirsty among them, ache with longing.
While we among them thirst and covet.

علىdespite أنناthat we بالعيشabout life أدرىbetter informed وأعرفand more knowledgeable
We taste life's healing, but not its bliss,
We taste the cure of life without its bliss,
Though we know life better and understand it more.
Though we know life best and are most familiar with it.

Yet delight has not eluded us,
But no sweetness has evaded us,
When polished verse attains its desired end:
When the questioning attains the cultivated intellect,
إذاwhen هوit سرىbrought solace عنfrom لهيفsomeone anguished مفجعbereaved
وآنسand comforted قلباًa heart موحشاًlonely يتشوفyearning
When it consoles someone anguished and bereaved,
It will sneak away from the grieving ardent lover,
And comforts a lonely, yearning heart.
And cheer up the lonely longing heart.
فماso not نحفلwe heed الدنياthe world إذاwhen جلgrows great ظلمهاits injustice
ونحنwhile we منfrom الأيامthe days والعيشand life تنصفreceive justice (probable reading)
So we heed not the world, however great its injustice,
So we do not care about the world when its injustice abates,
While days and life grant us our due.
And we and life itself are fair.
