Loyalty has vanished; I sense no loyalty.

And I see faithfulness as affectation and pretense.

The fault is mine [probable reading]: I trusted, and I

Offer sincere affection and follow the wilderness.

My closest loved ones, be gentle, and know

    That talebearers drive kindred apart.

If there is no tenderness, then answer our love

With a reply that offers solace in affliction.

If there is no tenderness, many a word

Consoles the yearning lover and dispels distress.

If there is no tenderness, do not scorn a burning grief

That, between the ribs, rends the entrails.

Grant me—and it is enough from you, [if parting must be]—

A word to ease the anguish of separation.

And when I recall nights we once shared,

The heart yearns and heaves a deep sigh.

Let me say, when separation storms upon us

And the memory of love rekindles passions in me:

How gentle were its days, and how tender!

It passed, leaving the poets engrossed in praise.

Do not withhold cheerfulness—it is an inborn trait

In you—as clouds withhold their water.

    ضحك الجمال بوجهه وأضاء

    One so bright and radiant cannot master frowning;

Beauty smiled upon his face and shone.

I had hoped that from you I would have

A heart that shares my loyalty in equal measure.

Yet you are like the sun, whose light refuses

    Ever to linger or remain.
