I would blame you if I thought my reproach could help,

but there is no blame and no reproach.

And one who parts from companions—to put it briefly—

is surely a brother to one who endures, hoping for reward.

I called you not to care for it, but

to a distance that keeps postponing our return.

And how could anyone restore my affection for you,

when you have made it ride fierce, unruly mounts?

So rise and clasp my hand in farewell,

as you clasped it when you sought closeness.

And if a feeling toward us stirs you,

and longing for us tugs hard at you,

then do not gnaw your fingertips over my affection,

nor gnash a fang over what is gone.

And if time should mend the rift between us,

despite my aversion and yours to reunion,

and the fates decree a meeting,

despite each of us preferring estrangement,

then do not reveal to these people that we

long ago were bound together as companions.

And do not let the eyes, when they meet,

tear the veil from our feigned indifference.

And stretch your hand toward me listlessly,

as though you carried hills in it.

    سألقاها وأحتقب الثوابا

    And neither frown nor smile at the meeting;

I shall face it and carry away the reward.

Indeed, love has died within us, or nearly died,

and found neither tenderness nor gentleness.

And it yielded up its life, or nearly did, but for

a loyalty that would not wish it laid in dust.

    وإلّا لا ملام ولا عتابا

    If you come to its aid, it will not perish, and will live;

otherwise, there is no blame and no reproach.
