I wasted my youth between dreaming and heedlessness,

And spent my life on false hopes.

And nothing remains to me, now that youth has passed me by,

And sped away like an arrow from an archer's bow.

The yellow boughs turn green and leafy again,

    Swaying after withering and calamities.

But the life that passes has no return,

Nor does an opportunity once lost ever come back.

True, I have gained in knowledge, understanding, and discernment,

And in forbearance, through some experiences I have undergone.

But there are many notches in my resolve,

Leaving me in life at the mercy of enticements.

And what good are knowledge and discernment in life,

If weak resolve stands in the way of one's aims?

As though we had two lives—one we pour away,

And another stored for us in the unseen.

Ah, if only one's life could be mended like one's garment,

And one part of it lifted after another.
