I shall coo like doves in gardens

    Of dreams, luxuriant with shade.

And sing aloud, not caring whether I am heard

By souls or by the deaf sands.

Nor shall I lower my voice merely because

I find ears unresponsive to my words.

The songster has delight enough in what he sings

Of beauty given form and majesty.

And why should I grieve for people brought low

By their own minds, beneath sandals?

Every bough, my friend, shall put forth leaves

That those who thirst for perfection have watered.

Boughs of wonders from a source of truth,

Of noble root and praiseworthy beginnings.

They shall bear their fruit one day, and songs shall be sung

Upon their boughs by the birds of night.

And are our trees anything but branches

Nurtured by the finest root in days gone by?

So fly within their shade like bees, and gather

There what you can of lawful honey.

And be certain that an age will remember us—

We shall make it forget the base through the sublime.
