وماليand I have no منfrom لفحscorching blast الزمانtime مقيلa midday resting place
I roam life's wildernesses, grief-stricken and bewildered.
I wander lost in the wilderness of life
And I have no refuge from time's scorching blast.
With no respite from the blows of fate
لقدindeed طالgrew long بيfor me التسيارthe wandering حتىuntil أملنيit wearied me
ولوand even though أنthat ألوانthe colors السماءof the sky شكولvaried forms
My wandering has indeed gone on until it wearied me,
Roaming has wearied me for so long
Even though the sky's colors are manifold.
That if the sky's colors were burdens

فكلfor every سناءradiance قدindeed عراهhas overtaken it ذبولwithering
My grief darkens everything I behold,
Grief darkens all that meets my eye
For every radiance has been overtaken by withering.
Stripping all joy bare and withered

فليسso there is no إلىtoward السعيstriving الجليلthe noble سبيلway
The weight of cares fetters me to the earth,
The weight of worries binds me to the earth
So there is no way to noble endeavor.
Leaving no path to noble deeds

وهيهاتand far beyond reach منهfrom it والجناحand the wing ثقيلheavy
Like an eagle that longs to rise but cannot,
Like an eagle wanting to soar but unable
And rising is far beyond its reach, its wing heavy.
Alas, with wings so heavily laden

And many a night, as though death had cast its shadows
A night whose shadows death has cast
Upon it, so the heart of darkness lay slain.
Enshrouding all in darkness slain

When lightning appears within it like a thread, revealed
When lightning flickers threadlike through the gloom
To the eyes is how its dark depths charge forth.
The eyes can barely grasp its thrashing

And if the winds awaken from their slumbers,
And if spirits rise from their slumber
I thought the worlds' roots had been severed for them.
Their roots seem ripped up from the ground

أرىI see حلماًa dream تنهارcollapse منهbecause of it عقولminds
My delusion took shape before me there and drew me away;
My fancy embodied itself and pulled me in
I behold a dream that makes minds crumble.
I see a dream crumbling all reason

As though radiant spring had given up its life,
As if unfettered spring had given itself up
And a ghoul had ravaged the powers of this natural world.
And nature's power raged uncontrollably
فلاso neither الصبحdawn مرجوٌّhoped for ولاnor الليلthe night منتهٍending
ولاnor النفوسthe souls الحائراتthe bewildered دليلa guide
So no dawn is hoped for, nor does the night end,
Neither morn looked for nor night ending
Nor have the bewildered souls a guide.
Nor lost souls finding guidance

And I saw a garden choked by rampant growth,
I saw a meadow raging with growth
And tall thorns covered it, rising above it.
Thick with brambles rising high

I took its thorns from it and wound them
I took its thorns and wound them
Into a crown for my head—and that was fearsome.
Around my head, a wreath so dire
فظلso kept on يضجclamoring الناسthe people إذwhen يبصروننيthey see me
ويضحكand laughs منيat me عالمa learned person وجهولand an ignorant one
So people kept clamoring whenever they saw me,
The people cried out when they saw me
And the learned and the ignorant laughed at me.
Learned and ignorant laughed alike

And boys gathered round me, making sport of me,
Children gathered round to tease me
And a companion and a dear friend looked down in shame.
Friends and loved ones turned away

I went on, without scolding an adolescent boy,
I walked on, sparing no jaded child
Nor did I heed how the gray-haired elders spoke.
Heedless of insults hurled my way

And in my ear a sweet voice urged me onward,
A voice echoed urging me on
Its beauty set my body swaying and bending.
In its beauty gentle and inclined

With it I cut through these people, as though they
To burst through the crowd as though they were
And what they held forth on this morning were mere trifles.
Vainglorious rumors voiced at dawn
