I have found sleeplessness a surer guide to sorrow,

And sleep more grievous to the heart.

How cruelly Time wrongs us! Is there, in

Wakefulness, one world, and another in sleep?

Woe to this heart for the vicissitudes of both!

Neither sleep is safety nor sleeplessness a refuge.

Death! If there is no escape, then death!

Indeed, it is succor and deliverance for the soul.

Indeed, dreams, whenever they visit, have

A bitter breath, tears, and flame.

How often has the mind, while awake,

Borne burdens from them like mountains of rock!

How often, after them, have we come to lament

The throbbing of a wound that once had healed!

    They shared our life in days gone by;

So they are part of us that decay has folded away.

I guard against them, while sleep hurls me about,

And I lower my gaze, while the heart sees.

Yet whether they are sweet or salty,

A burning breast and thirst are my lot.

Whenever we say, 'We have forgotten,' they kindle

From the heart's blood the fires of sorrow.

Fate created from them a world

That subdues the soul with the power of heartache.

O daughters of sleep, why do I graze

In your preserve on sorrow's bitter fruit?

Do the daughters of sleep assail us in slumber,

And the daughters of Time assail us with harm?

Where, O our driver—where are you taking us?

How utterly the long night journey has exhausted us!
