ماhow أفصحeloquent اللحظthe glance ياO حبيبيmy beloved
وأعذبand how sweet البثthe outpouring بالعيونthrough the eyes
How eloquent the glance, my beloved,
How eloquent is the glance, my beloved,
and how sweet the outpouring through the eyes!
And how sweet is the whispering with the eyes,

علىamid النوىseparation هزةa tremor الحنينlonging
No master poet, stirred
No masterful poet was moved,
amid separation by a tremor of longing,
By the shaking of yearning over the intentions.

منthan نظرةa glance الطرفthe eye فيin سكونstillness
is more beguiling and sweeter in speech to me
More articulate and sweeter,
than a glance of the eye in stillness.
Than the gaze of the eyelid in tranquility,

فيin ظلمةthe darkness الغابرthe past الدفينburied
A glance that illuminates what lay hidden
A glance that illuminates what was hidden,
in the darkness of the buried past.
In the darkness of the buried and forgotten past.

It has a radiance that, when it spreads
It has a glow, when it extends,
over secret confidences and sorrows,
Over the delicate and the grievances,

lends them its light, and they return
It lent its light to them, so they returned,
to fall like dew upon the heart of the sorrowful.
Moistened on the interior of the grieving one.
ياO قرةdelight العينthe eye أنتyou حسبيall I need
لولاكwithout you ماnot أثمرتbore fruit غصونيmy branches
O delight of my eyes, you are all I need.
O delight of the eye, you are enough for me,
Without you, my branches would bear no fruit.
Without you, my branches would not have borne fruit,

Without you, I could not endure my life,
Without you, I could not have endured my life,
nor bear the cheated man's bargain.
And not been able to bear the clamor of the foolish,
وددتI wished لوif تنفعavail الأمانيwishes
لوif only كنتI were لدناًsupple منamong الغصونthe boughs
I wished—if wishes could avail—
I wish that hopes could avail,
that I were a supple bough,
If I were to be gentle like the branches,

and would that I were a loud-voiced bird singing
And that I were a songbird singing,
in your spreading, sheltering shade.
In your shady and faithful shade,

Be mine; then came, pouring down
Be for me, so I may come and begin,
upon the earth, a steady rain of tears,
On the ground, the eternal sorrows,
لينبتso that ... may sprout الوردroses والأقاحيand daisies

so that roses and daisies might spring up,
So that roses and flowers may grow,
radiant of mouth and brow.
And the brilliance of the mouth and forehead,

And the turtledoves' cooing is only
These are merely the rhymes of the gambler,
at night, a refrain of moaning [uncertain reading].
In the night, the wailing of the grieving one.
