فراقي لكم أفنى التصبر عنكم

وجسمي أبلاه اشتياقي إليكم

My separation from you has exhausted my patient endurance in your absence.

And my longing for you has worn my body away.

عليكم سلام والتحية بعده

لكم وسؤال بعدنا كيف أنتم

Peace be upon you, and after it, greetings

to you, and a question after our parting: how are you?

فهل أنتم أحبابنا فى مسرة

فأرفض بعض الوجد اذ حيث كنتم

Are you then happy, our beloved ones,

so I may then cast off some anguish, wherever you may be?

ولى عندكم قلب عليه تداولت

سويداه أيدى السقم وجدا عليكم

And I have a heart with you, assailed in turn,

at its very core, by the hands of sickness, through longing for you.

يرى الوجد بعد البعد عنكم محللا

له ويرى أن السرور محرم

It deems love's anguish, after separation from you, lawful

for itself, and deems joy forbidden.

به من جحيم الشوق نار كأنها

وقد أضرمت بالبعد عنكم جهنم

Within it is a fire from longing's inferno, as though it were

Hell itself, kindled by separation from you.

وجفن كأن الدمع فى صحن خده

سيول عليها السحب بالوبل ثجم

And an eye, as though the tears across the expanse of its cheek

were torrents upon which the clouds pour heavy rain.

ألا لكم ربي لطيف وراحم

وحسبي لطف الله فينا وفيكم

Lo, my Lord is gracious and merciful to you.

And God's kindness toward us and toward you is enough for me.
