صبرتI was patient وكانand was الصبرpatience منيin me سجيةan innate trait
علىthrough كلall ماwhat ألقاهI encounter it منof وعرruggedness الدهرtime
I was patient, and patience was my nature,
I endured with patience, and patience was my nature
Through all the rough terrain of time I face.
Through all the ruggedness of fate I bore.
وإنيand indeed I رأيتhave seen الصبرpatience يحمدis praised غبةoutcome
وحسبكand enough for you أنthat اللهGod أثنىbestowed praise علىupon الصبرpatience
And indeed, I have seen patience praised for its outcome;
And yet I found that patience won no praise,
It is enough for you that God has praised patience.
Though God Himself enjoins that we be patient.
سأصبرI shall be patient حتىuntil يحكمjudges اللهGod بينناbetween us
ويختارand chooses ليfor me ماwhat ليسnot أختارI choose منof أمريmy affairs
I shall be patient until God judges between us,
I shall be patient, then, till God decide
And chooses for me, in my affairs, what I do not choose.
Between us, and choose for me what I would not.
ولاand no شكdoubt أنthat المرءa person فيin الدهرtime راحلjourneying
فأماso either إلىtoward يسرease وإماor else إلىtoward عسرhardship
And there is no doubt that a person journeys through time,
Man's sojourn in this world cannot endure;
Either toward ease or toward hardship.
The issue must be good or ill for all.
