عجبت له إذ زار في النوم مضجعي

وقد كان عني قبلها متجنبا

I marveled at him when he visited my bed in sleep,

I was amazed when he visited my bed in a dream

Though before that he had kept away from me.

Though before that he had been avoiding me

وأعجبني منه الوفا لي بطيفه

وأعجبني منه الوفا لي بطيفه

ولو زارني مستيقظا كان أعجبا

ولو زارني مستيقظا كان أعجبا

And his faithfulness to me through his apparition pleased me;

And I was astonished by his loyalty to me through his apparition

Had he visited me in waking life, it would have been more wondrous.

And it would have been more amazing had he visited me while awake

وما زارني في النوم إلا خياله

وما زارني في النوم إلا خياله

وكنت له في نومتي متسببا

وكنت له في نومتي متسببا

And only his image visited me in sleep,

He only visited me in my dream through his imagination

And I had caused his appearance in my slumber.

And I was the reason for his appearance in my sleep

ولما بدا كالغصن يهتز مثمرا

ولما بدا كالغصن يهتز مثمرا

فقلت له أهلا وسهلا ومرحبا

فقلت له أهلا وسهلا ومرحبا

And when he appeared, swaying like a fruit-bearing bough,

When he appeared like a fruitful swaying branch

I said to him, "Welcome, be at ease, and welcome!"

I said to him “Welcome, greetings and hello”

بنفسي وأهلي من أرى كل ليلة

بنفسي وأهلي من أرى كل ليلة

على له فضلا عظيما محببا

على له فضلا عظيما محببا

May my life and family be ransom for him whom I see each night,

To myself and my family whom I see every night

To whom I owe a great, cherished favor.

He has done them a great endearing favor

لقد علني من كأس خمرة ريقه

لقد علني من كأس خمرة ريقه

ضجيعي ورياه من المسك أطيبا

ضجيعي ورياه من المسك أطيبا

Indeed, he gave me draught after draught from the cup of his saliva's wine—

He has made me drink from the cup of his saliva

My bedfellow, whose fragrance was sweeter than musk.

My bed and seen his breath sweeter than musk
